LECTURE #3. Synagogues of the United States
This one-hour slide presentation and lecture focuses on the myriad styles of the synagogues of the United States. Starting with the oldest congregations such as the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue in New York City, the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island. We then visit some of the more remote communities such as Oil City, PA, Albuquerque, NM, and Corsicana, TX. The tour takes us to KAM (Kehilath Anshei Maariv) in Chicago, Temple Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, and Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco, which was devastated during the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. We continue with the Age of Modernism and focus on synagogues designed by such noted architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Minoru Yamasaki, Percival Goodman, Paul Rudolph, Harrison and Abramovitz, and Louis Kahn.
