Tour #14. Roosevelt Island Walking Tour

Located in the East River, between Manhattan and Queens, Roosevelt Island was once called Blackwell’s Island and Welfare Island. It was once the site of a penitentiary, the New York City Lunatic Asylum with its Pentagon Tower, and a Smallpox Hospital. There is a beautiful stone lighthouse at its northern end and a gorgeous Roosevelt Memorial in the Four Freedoms Park designed by noted Jewish architect, Louis Kahn, at its southern end. In more recent years, Roosevelt Island has become home to Cornell University and the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology Campus.
