There are many remnants of the Ice Age and the Wisconsin glaciers which covered much of Manhattan all the way down to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. There are massive boulders sitting atop polished and striated outcrops of Manhattan schist throughout Central Park. The glaciers stopped along what is now Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn and created the Terminal Moraine. Points south of this demarkation line are relatively flat outwash plains, hence names such as “Flatbush” and “Flatlands” are located as very flat terrain and marshlands, e.g. Jamaica Bay.
